Extending Legacy Applications to Meet the Demands Placed on Today's Government Systems
Every branch of the government whether global or local in nature is struggling with the need to meet the expanding requirements of it's technology infrastructure and applications. Legacy integration and mobilization are two areas of utmost importance to the security of our nation.
VOYAGER Edge®, unified intelligent application platform, utilizes an agent-based approach to link and manage a heterogeneous system composed of datasets, handheld communication devices, intelligent sensor networks, and simulation systems (such as weather simulations). Simulation Training Evaluation Systems can leverage this to provide pertinent, timely information to participants using PDA’s, laptops, and personal workstations. This approach includes mobile agents for reducing bandwidth usage and accessing, filtering and analyzing data at its source. VOYAGER Edge is a leader in this technology.
JFCOM JTEME Prototype
Since early 2006, Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) has used Voyager Edge as the communications protocol for the Joint After Action Review (JAAR) project. The JFCOM Joint Training and T&E Mobile Evaluation (JTEME; pronounced J-TEAM) prototype enables the DoD to perform real-time information exchange during training exercises. From a centralized command center questionnaires can be sent wirelessly to soldiers in the field via ruggedized PDAs. Responses are immediately distributed back to the command center as well as to all other PDAs participating in the exercise, and new questionnaires can be created and distributed based on real-time analysis.
Peer-to-Peer and peer-to-group chat sessions also enable participants to drill down into additional detail. Running Voyager Edge on these devices enables them to communicate in true peer-to-peer fashion, eliminating a single point of failure inherent to traditional client-server communications. Furthermore, Voyager Edge enables unparalleled reliability on PDAs so that questionnaires once received can continue to process if a wireless connection is severed or during radio silence. When a connection is available once again, the responses are distributed to the group as if no network outage has occurred.

Joint After Action Review Case Study |
JAAR Case Study |
Recursion Software's Voyager Edge™ intelligent software agents are currently being used by the Joint National Training Capability (JNTC) in the Joint After Action Review Tool Set (JAAR). Utilizing Voyager Edge Intelligent Mobile Agent Framework, the Government streamlined the access, filtering, and analyzing of data stored in heterogeneous systems. This solution was implemented in less than four weeks with the necessary code provided for intelligent agent mobility and communication between systems that were written in different platforms (Java and .NET).

Other Potential Applications:
-
First Responder Communications - Intelligent systems for emergency response will necessitate intra- and interagency coordination, cooperation, and communication and near instantaneous access to a wide array of information housed in separate databases. This article demonstrates that Voyager is a unique, multifunctional distributed programming product that can connect agencies to personnel, personnel to databases, and personnel to each other in either wired or wireless capacities and can do it with less bandwidth, in an uncertain network, filtering reams of data to return more actionable knowledge, can be stratified to appropriate "need to know" levels, and is interoperable among many platforms and hardware. Homeland Security - The emergence of the Secure Border Initiative (SBI) as a comprehensive approach of the federal government's (Department of Homeland Security) approach to secure the United States borders identifies the need to fulfill two strategic goals: Border Control and Interior Enforcement. SBInet will provide the system capabilities to meet the needs of the SBI by integrating technologies, infrastructure, a rapid response capability and personnel into a comprehensive border protection system. This type of network, with large-scale sensor arrays, planned for deployment, as part of the SBI, will require the use of intelligent mobile agents to cope with the complexity and sheer number of devices and sensors necessary to protect U.S. borders. Intrusion Detection - Intrusion can take place at any point in today's distributed networks, from physical components to applications, data from a variety of sources must be aggregated and correlated to determine if an intrusion is occurring at any point. Software agents can be deployed into a distributed computing environment to assist with the IDS processes. Intelligent mobile software agents may travel to sources of data and remotely execute their tasks, resulting in a natural distribution of work and reduced communication overhead. White papers »

Simulation Systems - In the past, advancements in high-performance computing have focused on producing larger and more accurate simulations, while the problem of how to transform the output -- possibly terabytes of data -- into knowledge has been neglected. Recursion Software is working with its clients to offer a solution to the current problems faced in simulation environments including large amounts of data to be processed across less-then-reliable mobile networks.
